The younger manager was very nice and polite and tried to be helpful. The older manager seemed to play a bait and switch with the room I reserved, saying we had talked when we had not and showing me a reservation that he had not sent to me. Supposedly renovated motel but renovation seemed to consist of a new toilet, new beds (which were surprisingly comfortable), odd linens (with the pillowcases put on inside out to hide stains), some pictures on the wall, and covering up the black mold in the bathtub with grout. We prefer the more convenient and less congested South Nags Head location.… I would like to be on that balcony or that bench along the boardwalk to the ocean right now.

Though on a smaller scale, The Blue Heron has more amenities than some larger cooperate counterparts. This motel offers great value, and we would most definitely stay here again. It is not really a big deal if you must have that view and wind up with a second-floor room. The third is slightly better than the second. The second and third floor rooms in both buildings offer excellent water views above large natural dunes. Fishermen seemed to gravitate to the cheaper first floor dune view rooms in the north building. It is not for picky or fastidious types who cannot handle minor flaws or an occasional smoker who may light up on their private balcony. This is a quiet and non-pretentious place offers clean rooms with full-on ocean facing private balconies. Nearby Sam and Omie’s, The Dunes, or Grits Grill all offer excellent hot breakfast. There is no breakfast of any kind offered here although a small supply of coffee is offered in the room. With true beach facing location, this low frill lodging is more connected to the ocean than most. There is a regular small outdoor pool, a lap pool and a very nice indoor pool suite with a hot tub and bathrooms. The opposite shared balcony is good for a brief sunset view over the Pamlico Sound. The Kitty Hawk high sitting chairs with a connecting middle table were most appreciated for seeing over the balcony. Our two double room provided very comfortable new mattresses, a large flatscreen TV, a nice new chest of drawers, a full-sized drip coffee maker, mini-refrigerator, and a microwave. The new owners are making noticeable investments in the rooms themselves. Despite these minor details, these 1960s era buildings seem quite sound, and it still can offer a great experience. I do wish they would get rid of the couple of random and broken-down furniture items on the beach side and broken ac units between the buildings.

The small tilt out windows above the tub used to provide wonderful ventilation but are now rusted in place. The attendant on the other end was able to answer practical questions, like “Where do we find the ice machine?” Sure, there is a spot of rust at every nail on every stair tread as you ascend the back stairs. We found the new owners’ kind, and the electronic kiosk for check in is effective.

It has since changed hands, but the physical structure remains mostly the same. The local owner was wonderful and welcoming.

The last time we stayed at this motel was 24 years ago, but we have never forgotten it. On the positive side, it is a great location, just steps to the beach, there are indoor and outdoor pools, the little balconies face the sea (you definitely want to be on the 3rd floor for that), the room has a microwave and small fridge and large screen tv, all of which worked well, and it seems to be pretty well sound conditioned from side to side, you do hear upstairs neighbors. The room could have been a whole lot cleaner.
